Description:

In his Guest Lecture, Thomas Getzen discusses the current financial crisis in relation to the large-scale system issues concerning spending, employment, and other aspects of medical care as a part of the economy. Addressing the two central issues in the macroeconomics of medical care--growth and distribution--he also poses and answers important and more questions such as:

  • How much does obesity really affect total medical costs?
  • Why does Boston spend so much more per person than Bangladesh?
  • Is it disease, or politics, or technology that controls the flow of health care dollars?
  • Who gets the care?
  • And who pays for it?

Lastly, Tom will discuss the use of current Congressional Budget Office, Medicare and Society of Actuaries macro models to quantify the lags that make the response of the health care sector to the recession so slow and delayed.
